(WWJ) Hunters are preparing to head into the woods for Michigan's two week firearm deer season. And while they're out there, Michigan State Police have a special request.

MSP is asking deer hunters to be especially observant — keeping an eye out for not only for that big buck, but also for any signs that could help locate missing people.

Lt. Renee Gonzales said hunters are often in remote or rarely explored areas, giving them the opportunity to assist in ongoing searches.

"They're out there with their partners, they're hunting, they're looking for deer. These are places where a lot people do not go into. They may see something that seems out of the ordinary," Gonzales said.

Gonzales told WWJ Newsradio 950's Pat Vitale that this request by police has paid of in the past.

"We've had something where a hunter might find something out in the woods, brings it to our attention, and we get out there and it actually is a lead in a case that we've been working," Gonzales said.

Gonzales said if you notice clothing, a shoe, a purse or other personal items, vehicles, or really anything unusual, please report it immediately to local law enforcement.

Michigan currently has 619 active missing persons cases, according to State Police.

This year's (2025) regular firearms deer season in Michigan runs from November 15–30.

- Regular Firearm Season: November 15–30, 2025
- Muzzleloading Season: December 5–14, 2025
- Late Antlerless Firearm Season: December 15–January 1, 2026
