NILES (WWJ) -- A Michigan State Trooper and a suspect are both hospitalized after exchanging gunfire during a traffic stop near the Indiana border.
Investigators say the MSP officer pulled over a Nissan vehicle on Wednesday evening in the city of Niles after the driver ran a stop sign.
The driver was then placed under arrest without incident for having a suspended license.
After the trooper asked the passenger to step outside the vehicle, physical contact was made and a struggle ensued before both fired shots.
The trooper and suspect were injured and taken to the hospital.
MSP says the officer, a three-year veteran with the department, is in stable condition. Meanwhile, the suspect is in serious condition.
The incident remains under investigation by State Police.
