STERLING HEIGHTS, Mich. (WWJ) – Anyone driving along Hall Road at night through the end of March will see a tribute to Ukraine from the city of Sterling Heights.

Mayor Michael Taylor announced Wednesday The Halo – the giant golden ring along Hall, just east of Schoenherr – will be lit up in yellow and blue, the colors of the Ukrainian flag, through the end of the month.

Taylor is urging leaders in communities across the U.S. to show support for Ukraine with similar gestures.

He says every night, drivers headed past The Halo will “take note of this lighting and keep the citizens of Ukraine in their thoughts and prayers.”

Taylor also announced Wednesday the city has divested Russian investments in Sterling Heights’ pension and retiree health care funds, equating to $679,000.

All Russian-related investments have been liquidated, as of March 9, city officials said.

“The City Council and I agree it made no sense for the city of Sterling Heights to conduct business with Russia on any level in light of atrocities perpetrated against innocent Ukrainian citizens,” Taylor said, per a press release. “We urge cities across the country to take similar action.”

Sterling Heights has “a rich tradition of welcoming refugees from around the world,” officials said. The city will “continue to be a leader” by reaching out to refugee placement organizations to let them know Sterling Heights is “a safe harbor” for Ukrainians and refugees.
