PONTIAC (WWJ) -- A cemetery that's been in existence longer than the state of Michigan is still cleaning up damage sustained from recent severe weather.
WWJ's Charlie Langton reports that the Oak Hill Cemetery on University Drive in Pontiac was founded in 1822, and has gravestones dating back to the Revolutionary War and the Civil War.
Sadly, the severe storms that hit metro Detroit on Tuesday knocked over trees on the cemetery grounds — many of which are over 100-years-old — and damaged several of the historic gravestones in the process.
Larry Keen, a volunteer, historian and groundskeeper at Oak Hill, says that he believes the damaged property cannot be repaired or replaced.
"I would imagine there will be a lot of damaged stones, and they're irreplaceable, because they go back in the 1800s," Keen told WWJ.
The city of Pontiac owns the Oak Hill Cemetery and is aiding in efforts to clean up the damage, but Hill says the process is going to be extensive.
