TROY (WWJ) -- A Troy woman could face jail time after police said she was caught driving drunk at more than three times the legal limit.
According to Troy Police, the arrest came at around 2 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 22, after officers responded for a welfare check on a driver who was stopped in the intersection of Wendover Rd. and Paddington.
A witness told police that the driver was sitting there for more than 20 minutes, when he approached to check on her. She gave him a thumbs up, the witness said, before driving away slowly.
The witness watched as the driver then drove off the road and then into multiple yards before hitting a street sign, in the area of Lanergan Dr. and Newgate Rd.
When police spoke with the driver, a 59-year-old woman from Troy, "officers immediately noted she was in an altered state," according to the police report.
Officers said the woman admitted to drinking champagne before driving, and then tested at a .219% BAC (blood alcohol concentration) on a preliminary breath test.
She was arrested and taken to the Troy PD lockup where police said a Chemical Breath Test showed results of .266% and .279% BAC — which is more than three times the legal limit to drive under Michigan law.
The driver, whose name was not immediately released, was issued a citation for Operating with a Blood Alcohol of .17% or More.
Under Michigan's "Super Drunk Laws," drivers with a BAC more than twice the state's legal limit of .08% face stiffer penalties, including up to 180 days in jail if convicted.
