DETROIT (WWJ) Ahead of Mother's Day, Detroit has ranked the worst city in the country for new mothers; according to a new survey from LawnStarter.
The survey ranked more than 170 of the country's biggest cities based on a variety of factors that would make them "new Mom friendly" including quality of maternity services at local hospitals; access to pediatricians, OB/GYNs, and lactation spaces. Researchers also looked at the amount of extra paid leave allowed for pregnancy and childbirth in the city, and delivery costs.
Salem and Portland, OR. topped the list for best cities for new moms. Even bigger cities, including New York and Boston, also made the top 10.
The Motor City shared the bottom 10, or worst places for new Moms, with Cleveland, Memphis, New Orleans, and Philadelphia.
A press release from LawnStarter said Detroit scored poorly in childcare access; home and outdoor environments; and tied for last place for "mom protections."
While last place, Detroit got a special shoutout in for its (free) Detroit Diaper Bank. Motor City Moms helping other mothers in their community is another bonus, the press release said.
"The stay-at-home moms who live near us offered to help this summer because I'm a working mom. So they're taking care of my children," one local Mom told LawnStarter. "I don't think it gets better than that."
