DETROIT (WWJ) – A person is hospitalized after being shot in the thigh by a Detroit police officer on Tuesday afternoon. Detroit police are also searching for another suspect who fled the scene.

Detroit Police Chief James White told reporters Tuesday officers in the area of Joy Road and Hubbel Avenue on the city's west side spotted a vehicle driving with an improper license plate and pulled it over.

The driver got out and fled on foot down Strathmoor Street, according to White. The chief said the passenger officer got out of the police car and gave chase.

At some point during the foot pursuit, shots were fired, according to White.

The officer fired at least one shot, striking the suspect in the thigh. Officers immediately rendered first aid and he was taken to a hospital, where he was listed in temporary serious condition. His name and age were not released.

No injuries to officers were reported.

White said authorities are still working to determine how many shots were fired and whether the suspect fired shots.

Detroit police said on Twitter the other suspect fled. The suspect's vehicle is believed to be a Chevy Suburban or Tahoe with MI license: ELY 6819.

Police recovered a handgun and a ski mask from the scene.

It was not clear why the suspects fled the traffic stop.

Anyone who knows something about Tuesday's incident is asked to contact the DPD homicide unit at 313-596-2260 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK-UP.

It was the second officer-involved shooting in Detroit in less than a week. Last Thursday a 27-year-old woman was shot and killed by officers responding to a mental health crisis. The caller reported her daughter had attacked her and her grandson.

While many details surrounding that shooting remain unclear, White announced Monday that two officers and one supervisor had been suspended and he had recommended to the Board of Police Commissioners they be suspended without pay.
