REDFORD (WWJ) – A young man is in custody after leading Michigan State Police on a chase from Detroit's west side to Redford Township late Tuesday night.
Detroit police asked MSP for assistance after spotting a shooting suspect in a Dodge Charger near Joy Road and American Street, just west of Livernois.
The car was wanted in connection to a drive-by shooting in Redford Twp., though authorities did not say when or where the drive-by happened. It was unclear if anyone was injured in the shooting.
Officials say the driver, later identified as a 19-year-old from Redford, took off driving recklessly and Trooper 2 – an MSP helicopter – was able to locate the Charger and begin following him.
Video from Trooper 2 shows a state police sergeant unsuccessfully trying a PIT maneuver before the suspect crashed into a car while turning onto the Southfield Freeway Service Drive.
The chopper eventually followed the Charger to a home in Redford, where the suspect was arrested after exiting. The suspect was held at the Detroit Detention Center on charges of fleeing and eluding state police.
A second male involved in the incident was also arrested on a street corner. Authorities did not release any information on him.
The Redford Township Police Department is investigating the shooting and seized the vehicle, according to MSP.
The incident was one of two chases involving Trooper 2. In the other case, a suspect was arrested in Dearborn after the outcome of a custody hearing in Macomb County descended into chaos as two people and a business were hit by gunfire and a car crashed into a restaurant.
"This is the second incident tonight where someone believed to be involved in a gun crime decided to put the public in danger by not stopping for police," MSP First Lt. Mike Shaw said. "But the continued work of several police agencies were able to safely take him into custody."
