Detroit police release video of suspect dousing, setting truck on fire [WATCH]

DETROIT (WWJ) -- The search is on for a man caught on neighborhood surveillance video setting a vehicle on fire on Detroit's north side on June 24.

Detroit police on Wednesday night tweeted a video showing an unknown suspect walking down the sidewalk in the 3800 block of Talbot Street -- near Conant and Caniff -- with what appears to be a plastic bottle in his hands.

After walking past a parked pick-up truck, the suspect is seen seconds later returning to the truck. The suspect dumps a liquid, presumed to be gasoline, on the windshield of the truck. After a failed attempt to throw a lit match on the vehicle, the suspect moves closer and nearly catches himself on fire before fleeing the scene.

Police have not released any further details about the incident, including a possible motive. Authorities said the arson happened on the morning of June 24, but did not provide a time.

The video also shows a van at a nearby stop sign as the suspect approaches the truck. A person is seen getting out of the van and walking to the other side of the street, before disappearing out of frame.

Detroit police are asking anyone who may have seen the crime, or recognizes the suspect, to contact the Detroit Police Department's Arson Unit at 313-596-2940 or the Arson Tip Line 313-628-2900.
