DETROIT (WWJ) - The Detroit Police Department is asking for the public's help in identifying a murder suspect who allegedly shot and killed a woman as she was leaving a store and then stole her vehicle late Wednesday evening.
Detroit Police Chief James White denounced the "senseless" murder of the victim, identified as Detroit resident Tracie Golden, and vowed to find the person responsible.
"I am truly saddened by the senseless murder of Mrs. Golden, she truly represented the best of us," White said of the victim in a prepared statement on Thursday. "We should all be outraged at the cowardly act that took her from our community."
According to police, Golden was leaving a store located in 19300 block of Grand River Ave. near Outer Driver on the city's west side shortly before 11 p.m. on Dec. 28 when she was approached by an unknown man.
The suspect took out a gun, shot Golden in the chest area, stole her keys and other items and took off in her SUV.
Golden was rushed to the hospital once EMS personnel arrived at the scene, but sadly died of her injures, White said.
Golden was mourned by friends and family on social media who said she served as chief union steward and Sinai Grace Hospital respiratory therapist. She was also a wife and mother.
"This suspect, and anyone aiding or harboring this individual, will be arrested and we will seek prosecution to the fullest extent of the law," the chief vowed. "We will use every available resource to bring Justice to the Golden family, as we pursue this murderer."
Authorities posted a video of the suspect who is still at large -- he is described by police as a black male, wearing a black jacket, gloves and dark colored shoes. He is armed with a handgun.
The vehicle the suspect fled the scene in is Golden's dark charcoal gray 2018 Dodge Journey, Michigan plate #DYN 1663.
