DETROIT (WWJ) -- Detroit Police apprehended two alleged carjackers after an officer-involved shooting on Sunday night. Two other suspects escaped.
On Monday, the Detroit Police Department released a statement detailing the events leading up to the officer-involved shooting.
Just before midnight on Sunday, an undercover officer spotted a GMC SUV that had been reported carjacked from the 22000 block of Fenkell.
He alerted DPD, who sent officers from the 8th Precinct to conduct an investigatory stop.
Law enforcement responded with emergency lights activated. The driver of the SUV pulled over at a gas station on the corner of 8 Mile Road and Glastonbury near Southfield Freeway.
As officers approached, two men got out of the SUV.
The driver then backed into one police car and drove forward into another. After striking the second car, the suspect steered the SUV straight at an officer, who was forced to roll out of the way.
Due to the direct threat to law enforcement's lives, three officers fired shots at the driver.
The driver and one unknown passenger sped off. Their status, and whether or not either suspect was hit, is currently unknown.
The two individuals who initially exited the SUV were arrested. Police later found the SUV abandoned nearby.
Detroit Police are searching for the driver and passenger. Anyone with information should contact DPD.
