Taylor North Little League Team wins World Series championship

TAYLOR (WWJ) -- The Taylor North little league team beat Ohio 5-2 on Sunday, winning the championship game in the Little League World Series!

Taylor North manager Rick Thorning talked live with WWJ's Zach Clark shortly after the win.

“I just had a chance to look at the banner and everything is just such a blur and it’s very emotional…such a high point of my life and these kids’ life and everybody involved,” Thorning said. It’s an unbelievable feeling I have right now.”

The Michigan and Ohio teams are from the Great Lakes, marking the only time in history that clubs from the same region faced off in the championship.

The last time a Michigan little league team won a World Title was over 60 years ago in 1959 when the Hamtramck Little League Team went all the way.

The Taylor team has received the support of the entire metro Detroit community, and shoutouts from the Detroit Tigers, as well as Gov. Gretchen Whitmer.

“They did it!” Whitmer tweeted following the game. “Congratulations to Michigan’s #LLWS Champions Taylor North!”

The City of Taylor is planning parade and celebration of the Little League team on Monday at 6 p.m at Heritage Park.
