TAYLOR (WWJ) -- Michigan State Police are looking into a fatal pedestrian crash in which a Taylor police officer hit a civilian in a local neighborhood.

MSP reported that the Taylor Police Department contacted the Detroit Regional Communication Center at about 1 a.m. to have state troopers investigate a crash involving one of their patrol cars at Goddard Road and Westlake Ave.

A crash reconstructionist was assigned to the case along with Special Investigation Section detectives.

According to MSP, their preliminary investigation indicated that the Taylor officer was responding to a service call in that neighborhood. It appears he was travelling at the posted speed limit and without lights or sirens.

As he drove, MSP said that the officer was looking for the address of the service call on his left when he struck a pedestrian who was in the roadway.

The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene and taken to a local hospital.

WWJ's Luke Sloan spoke to Taylor Police Lieutenant Anthony Neil, who described the incident as "very sad, all the way around," emphasizing that the fatal crash was not intentional. He also offered the department's condolences and prayers to the victim's family.

According to Lt. Neil, the officer is under investigation by MSP but remains employed.

The on scene investigation has been completed, per MSP.

A review of the in-car camera footage, further inspection of the patrol car, a medical examiner's report and the prosecutor's review are still pending.

This is an open investigation. WWJ Newsradio 950 will provide updates as more information becomes available.
