(WWJ) — A Taylor woman has been charged with second-degree murder in connection with a crash that killed a doctor this summer.
Felecia Sunshine Lazo, 25, is expected to be arraigned in the coming days for the July 19 crash in Dearborn that claimed the life of 33-year-old Dr. Ghada Mustapha of Dearborn.
It happened around 8 a.m. that Friday at the intersection of Michigan Avenue and Nowlin Street, according to the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office.
When officers showed up, they found Lazo’s car turned over on the median of Michigan Avenue and Mustapha’s car facing north in the eastbound lanes.
Mustapha was pronounced dead at the scene, while Lazo was taken to the hospital to be treated for her injuries, according to the prosecutor’s office.
Authorities say Lazo was headed east on Michigan when she ran a red light at Nowlin “at an extremely high rate of speed” and slammed into Mustapha’s car, killing her.
“It is always beyond tragic when the life of a promising young person is cut short over the horrific actions of another. By every account, Ghada Mustapha was a young, brilliant, and passionate doctor who was just beginning her medical career. She had hopes, dreams, and goals for herself and her family. The alleged actions of this defendant took away her life - along with those hopes, dreams, and goals,” said Prosecutor Kym Worthy.
If convicted, Lazo could face life behind bars or any term of years in prison.
