DETROIT (WWJ) -- A Detroit teen is facing charges after a confrontation with police, Thursday night.
According to Wayne County Prosecutor' Kym Worthy, the 16-year-old juvenile was wounded in a shooting involving Detroit police in the area of Fenkell Avenue and Brammel Street, at around 9:30 p.m. on April 4.
Worthy said officers saw that the suspect was carrying a concealed weapon.
When they confronted the teen, it's alleged he ran away.
During the foot chase, prosecutors said an officer "observed the juvenile respondent with his hand on the weapon."
That's when prosecutors said the officer shot at the juvenile, striking him in the leg.
The teen was taken by EMS to a local hospital where he was treated and released.
He was charged with two counts: Receiving and Concealing a Firearm and Carrying a Concealed Weapon, Worthy said.
A preliminary hearing was held Friday afternoon, and the teen's bond was set at $3,000/10%. His next court date is a pretrial scheduled for May 29.
As for the officer-involved shooting, a Detroit police spokesman, Sgt. Jordan Hall, called WWJ Newsradio 950 Friday morning requesting that we do not report that an officer shot the teen, as that was still under investigation.
Hall said that shot spotter technology confirmed that two shots were fired, but that investigators didn't yet know who fired those shots.
Speaking at news conference, Detroit Police Chief James White said like all officer-involved shootings, the entire DPD leadership would be involved in this case, working to determine what exactly happened.
"This is how we respond," the chief told reporters. "Anytime an officer uses force, there's a serious use of force, or a critical use of force, the entire command team responds, as well as our investigative assets."
White said the 9mm handgun the teen was carrying was recovered by police at the scene, and that the weapon was found to have been stolen from Dearborn Heights in 2022.
The teen's name was not released, due to his age.
No police officers were hurt.
