DETROIT (WWJ) — A teenager who was grazed by a bullet during a confrontation with Detroit police is out of the hospital, and is expected to face charges.
The incldent happened about 7:30 p.m. Thursday in the Brightmoor area, in the northwest corner of Detroit, according to Police Chief James White.
White said the suspect was being checked for carrying a concealed weapon when he ran.
While White did not say that police opened fire, he did confirm that the teen was grazed by a bullet.
"He was transported to an area hospital, conscious and alert," White said. "It's my understand that he's already been released. So, obviously he is going to recover from his injuries. Luckily, no officers were hurt."
Chief White said the 9mm handgun the teen was carrying was recovered by police at the scene. White said the weapon was found to have been stolen from Dearborn Heights in 2022.
The teen was expected to be taken into custody, White said.
Speaking to WWJ Newsradio 950, Detroit Police Sgt. Jordan Hall said what is known at this time is that two shots were fired. This was confirmed by shot spotter technology.
Hall said the DPD at this time is not confirming nor denying that the teen was shot by an officer, and that an investigation is underway to find out where the shots came from.
White said like all officer-involved shootings, the entire DPD leadership is involved in this case, and will be working to determine what exactly happened.
"This is how we respond," he told reporters. "Anytime an officer uses force, there's a serious use of force, or a critical use of force, the entire command team responds, as well as our investigative assets."
The teen's name and age were not released.
