DEARBORN (WWJ) -- A Dearborn teenager is hospitalized after getting hit by a car before school Friday morning.

Dearborn police officials say officers responded around 7:30 a.m. on Dec. 20 to Ford and Schaefer Roads, after reports came in about a pedestrian who had been hit in front of Fordson High School.

Police said the 15-year-old girl was in the intersection when she was hit by a black Jeep Cherokee headed westbound on Ford Rd.

The teen was taken by EMS to a local hospital, where she was listed in critical condition, police said.

Dearborn police are still investigating what led to the crash, and are also working with the school district to provide grief counseling for staff and students.

Authorities said the driver is cooperating with police.

Police said they will not be releasing the student's name, but that further details about the incident will be made public once they become known through the ongoing investigation.

Dearborn Police Chief Issa Shahin said, in a statement: “Our prayers are with the victim’s family, as well as the school staff and students at Fordson, and we hope for an eventual recovery. We continue to urge drivers to pay attention to their surroundings, slow down, and be safe on the roads.”

Anyone that may have witnessed this incident is asked to call police at 313-943-2241.
