KALAMAZOO (WWJ) - A 17-year-old suspect was shot at by officers and hit with a police car early Wednesday morning while trying to get away from police after open firing on another teen in Kalamazoo.
The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety said the trouble began just after 1 a.m. on Aug. 30 when officers were on a patrol in the 500 block of N. Church Street.
While in the area, police saw a male suspect shoot another person.
The suspect tried to get away and the officers pursued, the department added.
"During this chase, an officer fired one shot at the suspect and an additional Public Safety Officer struck the suspect with their vehicle," officials said in an update to social media.
It is unclear if the round shot by the officer hit the teen.
The suspect was apprehended by police and a firearm was recovered. He was then taken to Bronson Hospital where he is expected to make a full recovery from minor injuries sustained in the incident.
Police said the 17-year-old victim of the original shooting that was observed by officers remains in critical condition at the same hospital.
Detectives with Michigan State Police are expected to investigate what occurred between the suspect and KDPS officers per department protocol.
"The officers involved in the incident were not injured and have been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation," the department stated.
No other details about the shooting have been made public.
