Teen snowmobiler killed after falling through ice on U.P.'s Indian Lake

It is the second death involving a snowmobiler reported in the Upper Peninsula this week

SCHOOLCRAFT COUNTY (WWJ) - One person is dead and three others were injured after a snowmobile went through ice on a Upper Peninsula lake on Wednesday, authorities said.

As reported by UpNorthMatters, a witness called 911 just after 6:30 p.m. on Feb. 21 when they saw a snowmobile plummeted through ice on Schoolcraft County's Indian Lake.


The caller said the incident occurred roughly a mile from the shoreline.

Emergency crews responded to the lake where they were informed that two teens were on the snowmobile.

Family members were already at the scene and tried to rescue the two snowmobilers, but in the process, two adults also fell through the frozen surface and needed help.

Rescue teams from the Manistique Public Safety, Sault Tribal Police, Schoolcraft County Sheriffs Dept, DNR, Thompson Township Fire and troopers from Manistique and Gladstone immediately went to work upon their arrival, pulling the two adults and one of the teens out of the freezing water.

The three victims were taken to a local hospital for treatment of hypothermia.

The trio have all since been released from the hospital.

The search for the second teen continued, but crews were unable to locate the victim.

Around 1 a.m. on Thursday morning, he Delta County Sheriff's Dept Dive Team announced the body of the missing teen was found and recovered from the lake.

The identity of the deceased has not been made public.

No other details have been released.
