DETROIT (WWJ) — We saw some cold weather this week in Metro Detroit, but it’s about to get a whole lot colder.
While we saw temperatures hovering in the 20s on Wednesday and Thursday, they’re about to plunge into the single digits after the weekend, thanks to air originating in Siberia.
AccuWeather meteorologist Brian Thompson tells WWJ Newsradio 950 so far temperatures in the new year have been “running colder” than average, and we’re “probably just gonna make that deficit even bigger as we head into next week.”
Lions fans heading Downtown Detroit for Saturday night’s playoff game can take a little solace that we’re getting “a bit of a break” with temps climbing a bit above average for the weekend, but Thompson says it won’t last long.
“The air coming in next week certainly looks like the coldest air of the season so far; it might end up being the coldest air of the winter, as there will be a lobe of the polar vortex that comes southward,” Thompson said on WWJ’s Weather Wednesday.
With some of that air originating in Siberia, high temperatures are expected to be in the teens by Sunday and will continue to drop the next two days.
Thompson says high temperatures on Monday and Tuesday will be “struggling to reach 10 degrees,” including a high of 8 on Tuesday. He says there may be a night or two where temps dip below zero.
The National Weather Service says the coldest temperatures and wind chills are expected Tuesday and Wednesday mornings.
“There’s gonna be some wind involved, so RealFeel temperatures will be well below zero. This is gonna be a very cold air mass, at least through the first half of next week,” Thompson said.
Meanwhile, there’s another round of snow on the way to Metro Detroit this weekend that could make for slippery travel at times.
After a couple of inches fell Wednesday into Thursday, the area will get just a short break before more snow arrives Friday night.
Overall, most areas of Metro Detroit are only expected to see 1 or 2 inches of snow accumulation with this round (earlier estimates called for up to 4 inches).
