
(WWJ) – Thousands of Metro Detroiters woke up to no power Sunday morning after high winds swept across the area on Saturday.
DTE Energy officials say just under 10,000 homes and businesses are still offline as of 5:30 p.m. Sunday. That number was at nearly 20,000 earlier in the day.
The latest round of outages in Southeast Michigan comes after wind gusts reached as high as 50-60 mph on Saturday.
Officials haven’t provided an updated time of restoration for many areas affected by the storms, but a statement on the DTE website says 95% of customers can expect to have power restored by the end of the day Sunday.
Among the larger pockets of outages are parts of Detroit, Dearborn, Westland and Taylor. but DTE officials say more than 200 crews will be in the field working on restoration efforts.
DTE is reminding residents to stay safe and remember to stay at least 25 feet from any downed power lines, assuming they are live and dangerous.
Downed power lines can be reported to DTE by visiting the utility’s website or calling DTE’s 24-hour hotline at 1-800-477-4747.
Nearly 40,000 DTE customers were in the dark at the peak of this weekend's outages.
