(WWJ) -- Don’t be surprised if you spot some vintage airplanes across the metro Detroit skies this weekend.
The Thunder Over Michigan Airshow is set for Willow Run Airport in Ypsilanti.
However, due to major construction on the runway, a number of planes -- including the Blue Angels -- are taking off and landing at Selfridge Air National Guard Base in Macomb County’s Harrison Township.
The air show’s executive director, Kevin Walsh, says this weekend’s event features a rare occurrence: the U.S. Navy Blue Angels and U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds performing in the same event.
The occasion marks the first time that both aerobatic fighter jet teams are in Michigan together.
Walsh says the hope is that the event inspires both flyers and non-flyers to "do great things."
"Everyone that is participating this weekend all started out as a non-pilot at one point in time, or a non-maintainer, or a non-logistics person," Walsh said. "They were able to set a goal and achieve it, and we hope people find inspiration in seeing all these folks meeting their goal."
The show runs Saturday, August 6 and Sunday, August 7 -- two events per day -- and tickets are being sold this year as “Drive-In Car Passes.”
"Instead of just sitting in the grass field like normal at the airshow, you're going to actually be able to drive your car to that point and have the amenities of your car right there with you while you watch the show," Walsh previously told WWJ. "But you also can enjoy the static display area, the kids zone. Food concession areas will be available, helicopter rides, tours of aircraft... So it's going to be very, very normal. The seating area is just going to be different."
The Blue Angels will fly each day during the morning show, and the Thunderbirds will fly at the afternoon show. Also appearing will be the USAF F35 Demo Team and the Mitchell B 25 Bombers.
