(WWJ) The Thunder Over Michigan Airshow will return to Willow Run next month, after being canceled last year due to the pandemic.
Kevin Walsh, President and CEO of the Yankee Air Museum, says this year's show will be unlike anything we've seen before, with the U.S. Airforce Thunderbirds and U.S. Navy Blue Angels flying together for the very first time in a Michigan airshow.
"Most likely it'll never occur again," Walsh told WWJ's Amber McDonald. "It's one of those once-in-a-lifetime opportunities to come out and see both of America's jet demonstration teams at one show."
Something else new for 2021: Tickets are sold as “Drive-In Car Passes.”
"Instead of just sitting in the grass field like normal at the airshow, you're going to actually be able to drive your car to that point and have the amenities of your car right there with you while you watch the show," Walsh said. "But you also can enjoy the static display area, the kids zone. Food concession areas will be available, helicopter rides, tours of aircraft... So it's going to be very, very normal. The seating area is just going to be different."
There will be a total of four shows: two each day on Saturday, August 7, and Sunday, August 8 at the Willow Run Airport in Belleville. (Get directions).
The Blue Angels will be flying each day during the morning show, and the Thunderbirds will fly at the afternoon show. Also appearing will be the USAF F35 Demo Team and the Mitchell B 25 Bombers.
Walsh says there is limited space on the field, and organizers are expecting a sell-out crowd.
Tickets are available now on the Yankee Air Museum website.
