EASTPOINTE (WWJ) -- Authorities say urgent help is needed in the case of five "precious newborn kittens" that were found outside a motel in Macomb County's Eastpointe.

Shortly after 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, the Eastpointe Police Animal Control Division says someone abandoned the kittens in front of a room at the Eastland Motel, on Gratiot Ave., north of 8 Mile Rd.

In a social media post seeking information from the public, the division called it a heart-wrenching situation.

"We’re deeply concerned for their well-being and want to ensure they receive the care they need. We are also concerned for their mother, who was not with them," the division wrote, asking that anyone who knows anything about the person who left the kittens to please give them a call.

"It’s crucial to hold accountable those who neglect their responsibilities for these innocent lives," the division added. "Let’s come together as a community to spread the word and help find the person responsible to teach them this is not how animals are to be treated!"

While no suspect description has been released, grainy security footage shared by the department shows a person with long hair, in a gray or tan hoodie, walking up and leaving the kittens outside the door of a motel room. SEE IT HERE.

Some in the comments wondered whether she thought she was delivering the kittens to someone, and there was some sort of a mistake.

There is some good news in an update issued by the department.

While the person who left the kittens yet been identified, a local rescue group has taken them in and is caring for them while authorities continue to search for their mother.

Anyone with information about this incident is urged to call 586-445-5100, Ext. 2, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday-Thursday.
