PLYMOUTH TWP. (WWJ) -- What began as a road rage incident led to an armed standoff, a shelter-in-place order, and the arrest of a man in Plymouth Township on Friday.
According to Plymouth Township Police Chief James Knittel, it all began at around 11:30 a.m. with a "traffic altercation" on Haggerty Road, between Ann Arbor Rd. and Joy Rd., in which a driver pointed a gun.
One driver, the chief said, was behind another driver who had a green arrow signal. "And it sounded like there was a disagreement between the two drivers whether the person should proceed or not," Knittel said. "There was beeping of the horn, and then the firearm was involved in the incident."
Knittel said no shots were fired, but 911 was called, and police responded.
Officers tracked the armed suspect to the Bradbury condominium complex, in the area of Joy and Haggerty Roads.
"We identified where the subject was at," the chief told WWJ's Darrylin Horne. "He refused to come out of the residence. At that point we established a perimeter."
Knittel said his department requested help from the Western Wayne Special Operations Team, and the specials ops arrived, along with negotiators.
During the standoff, residents of the complex were told to shelter in place, and the public was asked to avoid the area.
After about two and-a-half hours, Knittel said the suspect came out of the home and surrendered.
Knittel said the man was taken into custody without incident, and no one was hurt.
The suspect's name is not being released at this time, with expected charges pending.
Joy Road has since been reopened in the area, and the shelter-in-place order has been lifted.
