DETROIT (WWJ) - One state trooper is hospitalized after she was hit and pinned between a vehicle and a concrete barrier while on the scene of a multi-vehicle crash in Detroit on Friday, authorities said.
According to Michigan State Police, the trooper was at the scene of a three-vehicle crash on eastbound I-94 near Chene in Detroit around 10:25 p.m. when another driver passing the scene lost control of their vehicle.
As seen in video posted of the incident by state police, the trooper was standing on the passenger side of one of the stopped vehicles involved in the initial crash when the driver who lost control collided into the parked vehicle.
It caused a chain reaction, pushing the parked vehicle into the trooper and briefly crashed her up against a concrete barrier.
Troopers said the driver who lost control was traveling too fast for road conditions and failed to move over for emergency vehicles.
"The trooper was transported to a local hospital where she is listed in stable condition from several broken bones and internal injuries," MSP said in an update on Saturday morning.
The incident remains under investigation at this time.
State police posted a video of the crash to social media with a warning to other drivers.
"This video shows why we ask drivers to slow down and move over. It also shows how fast things can change and why its important to stay in your car when involved in a crash or not to stop and help but to call 911 instead," MSP said.
The video may be disturbing to some, caution is advised.
MSP said several troopers had sustained minor injuries and several patrol cars were struck as they worked through a brutal winter storm that ripped through Michigan on Friday.
"Troopers have done an awesome job serving drivers during this winter storm," MSP said.
State police said treacherous travel conditions are still affecting roadways on Saturday as dangerous cold and windy, blowing snow continue in Southeast Michigan.
"Please #SlowDown & #MoveOver for emergency vehicles. If you can avoid travel tonight, stay home!" MSP advised.
