OAKLAND COUNTY (WWJ) - Michigan State Police looking for a 30-year-old special needs man jumped into action after learning he had fallen through ice on a frozen pond.

MSP said the man had gone missing from a group home at 6104 Groveland Rd in Groveland Township. The man was said to have autism and had left the property in the evening hours on Wednesday night.

Troopers immediately responded to the area in northern Oakland County and began searching for the man with ground assistance from police K-9 units and the department's helicopter, Trooper 3.

Authorities were searching for over two hours when a call came in about a man who had fallen through ice on a frozen pond about four and a half miles from the group home.

"Without hesitation troopers headed onto the ice to rescue the man who had fallen through the ice and was submerged up to his chest and was suffering from hypothermia," MSP said on their social media.

Authorities said the man was calling out for help and troopers sprang into action and ventured out on the ice.

One trooper fell through and began smashing his way to the man by breaking the ice in front of him with his fists; a second trooper was able to walk out to the man and hoisted him out of the water before dragging him to safety.

Once on shore, MSP said the 30-year-old man was identified as the missing male from the group home. He was transported to Ascension Genesys Hospital for treatment.

He expected to make a full recovery, according to MSP.
