TROY (WWJ) – A Troy man is expected to face charges after getting into a crash while drunk and fleeing the scene, then telling police he didn't know what he hit.
Around 12:30 a.m. on Monday, June 19 Troy police officers were called to the area of Rochester and Big Beaver Roads for a crash where one of the vehicles involved drove away.
Shortly after they showed up, officers were flagged down by a passerby in a nearby parking lot where they saw a GMC Yukon with heavy front-end damage, two flat tires and smoke coming from the engine compartment.
When officers spoke to the owner of the SUV, who was standing nearby, and asked him what happened, he told them he had hit something but he didn't know what.
Officers noticed the 36-year-old man was slurring his words and smelled like alcohol.
Officers confirmed the debris left at the crash scene matched the man's SUV. After failing several field sobriety tests, he blew a .15% BAC and was arrested and taken to the Troy Police Lock-Up.
Officers found marijuana "throughout the passenger compartment" during a search of the SUV. Authorities got a search warrant to draw the man's blood to run chemical tests.
The case has been forwarded to the Troy Police Department Detective Bureau for appropriate warrants once the blood results are returned.
