FARMINGTON HILLS (WWJ) - State police are investigating into an alleged freeway shooting on I-696 Tuesday evening after a truck was shot at while changing lanes in Oakland County.
Troopers became aware of the incident after a witness called in around 8 p.m. to report he had witnessed a shooting while driving on westbound I-696 near Farmington Road.
The caller told dispatchers that he was driving in the middle left lane within view of a white Dodge Ram 2500 in front of him and a red Equinox in the left lane.
The witness said they were approaching the Farmington Road overpass when the white truck abruptly changed lanes and got in front of the red SUV.
"The witness stated right after this occurred, he heard "popping" sounds and what sounded like metal striking metal," Michigan State Police (MSP) said in an update to social media,
The driver of the white Ram also called Detroit Regional Communication Center to report he had been shot at in the same location, just before Farmington Road.
The driver of the truck said he was shot at from behind, but was able to get over to the right and get a license plate number.
"The rear window and windshield on the white Ram were both damaged," trooper said. "An evidence search located one shell casing. The red Equinox was located and the driver interviewed. There were no bullet holes nor any damage to the vehicle."
State police said both the truck and the SUV were taken to the Second District post and will be examined after a search warrant is secured. The incident remains under investigation in addition to pending prosecutor review.
