ROMULUS (WWJ) -- Security at Detroit Metro Airport stopped a passenger from boarding a plane with a gun after discovering it during a routine screening.

A TSA officer spotted the firearm on Thursday while x-raying a carry-on, after which officials were able to alert Airport Police, who stopped the passenger.

The gun marks the seventh firearm detected at DTW so far this year. In 2022, 100 firearms were discovered at DTW security checkpoints, while 94 were detected in 2021.

While passengers can travel with a firearm in checked baggage, the guns must be unloaded, packed separately from ammunition in a locked hardback case and declared at the airline check-in counter.

In December, TSA announced the penalty for bringing weapons to the airport had increased, and can cost as much as $14,950, depending on the circumstances.

Details on how to properly travel with a firearm can be found on the TSA website.
