DEARBORN (WWJ) A young man and woman died in a single-vehicle crash on Michigan Avenue in Dearborn.
In a statement on X, Dearborn Police said their officers and the Dearborn Fire Department were called to the area of Michigan Avenue and Southfield on Sunday (8/11) around 2:08 a.m.
Police said a Dodge Charger, driving at a "high rate of speed" east on Michigan Avenue, "lost control, and struck a tree."
The driver, an 18-year-old Dearborn man, died at the scene. A passenger, a 20-year-old Garden City woman, passed away from her injuries at a local hospital.
Another passenger is hospitalized in critical condition.
The car carried a total of six people between the ages of 15 and 20, police said.
"The rest are being treated for less serious injuries," the statement read.
Police are withholding the victims' names until the investigation is complete.
"This is a senseless tragedy and our prayers go out to the families of those involved," Dearborn Police Chief Issa Shahin said in the statement. "As we grieve this tragedy, we urge parents to take the time to talk with young drivers about the importance of safe driving. We need your partnership to help keep this community safe."
