(WWJ) A house fire on Detroit's northwest side has killed two people, according to Detroit Fire.

The Detroit Fire Department said the flames broke out at a home on Tracey near 8 Mile and Schaefer earlier Monday afternoon. As of 2:30 p.m., firefighters were still on scene.

Deputy Fire Commissioner Dave Fornell says a man and a woman were found in the bedroom. One was 78 years old. The other was in his or her sixties.

One of the adults was bedridden, while the other used a walker; according to Fornell.

"Upon arriving on the scene, the back section where the individuals were found was fully engulfed. There was nothing we could do," Detroit Fire Chief Marvin Parker told WWJ. "They were already dead before we arrived."

Neighbor Rosie McGruder heard the explosion from her home about a block and a half away.

"I was sitting in my den, looking at TV. I heard this loud boom, then I heard another one…I saw some little boys running down the street, and they said there was an explosion down by 8 Mile," McGruder told WWJ.

Investigators originally believed an oxygen tank may have exploded, leading to the fire. However, Fornell later told WWJ there is no evidence of that following further investigation. Arson investigators have been called in.
