GAINES TWP., Mich. (WWJ) – An investigation is underway after a shooting in a high school parking lot as a graduation ceremony was letting out Thursday night.

The Kent County Sheriff’s Office says it happened around 7:20 p.m. as the Crossroads Alternative High School graduation ceremony was coming to an end at the East Kentwood High School football stadium.

Authorities said two people were shot and people in two white sedans exchanged gunfire, including a 16-year-old boy from Texas and a 40-year-old Grand Rapids woman, according to a report from WOOD TV in Grand Rapids.

Officials say the boy was shot once and the woman was hit twice.

They were both said to be in stable condition.

Authorities said no arrests had been made and there was no known connection between the victims and suspects.

It was not immediately clear what prompted the situation.

There were about 60 students involved in the graduation ceremony, while a middle school band concert was happening at the same time in the school’s auditorium.

Officials said families were able to safely leave the school after the shooting.

The investigation is ongoing.
