(WWJ) Two people were shot at an apartment complex near the Central Michigan University campus, leaving one young man fighting for his life.
The Isabella County Sheriff’s Office said a fight broke out at a party in the Deerfield Apartments, across the street from the south side of campus in Mt. Pleasant, around 1 a.m. Saturday. At least one person left the party and went to his car to get a gun. He returned and opened fire, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
One man, 20, was rushed to Hurley Medical Center. He is in critical condition. A second man, 23, was taken to Midland Hospital by private car. He is in stable condition.
Central Michigan University will not confirm at this time if the victims and suspect are students.
No arrests have been made.
“Thus far, this incident is believed to be isolated to the venue,” a statement from the Isabella County Sheriff read. “However, because the incident is still under investigation and no arrests have been made, the risk to the public is elevated.”
The University will have counselors available to students.
“Violence can trigger a range of emotions and responses. Seeking support from friends, family or a counselor can help process these reactions,” a Facebook statement from the University read.
Students who wish to speak to a counselor should call 989-774-3381 or visit the CMU Counseling Center website to make an online request for counseling; a counselor will reach out to you.
Anyone who witnessed or has information on the shooting is asked to call the Isabella County Sheriff Central dispatch at (989) 773-1000.
