(WWJ) -- University of Michigan swimmer Maggie MacNeil has struck gold at the Olympics!

WWJ's Jeff Lesson reports the London, Ontario-native won the gold medal on Sunday during the Tokyo Games.

MacNeil, a senior at U of M who is on Team Canada, swam the 100-meter butterfly in 55.59 seconds, beating out China’s Zhang Yufei by just 0.05 seconds and earning her the second-fastest time in Olympic history.

With her win, MacNeil became the second U of M women’s swimmer to score gold in an individual event. Gunny Duenkel was the first to do so when she won the 400-meter freestyle in 1964.

MacNeil — a 14-time Big Ten champion and two-time Big Ten Swimmer of the Year — was also the first Canadian in history to win gold in the women’s 100-meter butterfly.

This marks MacNeil’s second medal at the Tokyo Olympics. She also took silver over the weekend during the 4x100-meter freestyle relay.
