DETROIT (WWJ) -- Progress is being made on the site of the old J.L. Hudson’s Department store in downtown Detroit.

Bedrock, Dan Gilbert’s real estate company, is heading the development of the new edition to city’s skyline, and the latest updates show plans are expanding for the site on Woodward Avenue’s 1200 block.

Construction on the skyscraper began in 2017, and the project made some major headway over the last several months as the building began to take shape with steel beams being put into place.

Initially meant to stand at 680 feet tall -- making it the second tallest building in Detroit behind the Renaissance Center -- the project's website now says the skyscraper’s size has increased to 685’-4”.

The site has also expanded its ground-floor retail space from 18,000 to 28,600 square feet, and added a 5-star luxury hotel with 227 rooms, as well as a 21,000-square-foot outdoor plaza with additional market space, public art, and year-round programming.

Additionally, the site will include 100-120 upper-floor condo and apartment units; a publicly accessible rooftop terrace with food and beverage options; several floors of office space; and event venues spanning 126,000 square feet.

The project was once expected to reach 900 feet, surpassing the riverfront's Ren Cen, which stands at 727 feet. Bedrock later revised the size.

The nearly $1 billion project is expected to be completed in 2023.
