(WWJ) U.S. Customs officials have seized nearly $21 million worth of jewelry at the Detroit/Canada border.

The Customs and Border Protection’s (CBP) Office of Field Operations revealed Wednesday that agents discovered a shipment of Harry Winston necklaces, rings and more at the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel on Monday.

Officials say the valuable jewelry -- which was headed for an auction in New York -- was undeclared. That's against the law because goods entering the U.S. are subject to duty and other restrictions.

The courier wasn't aware of what was in the package.

“For the traveling public, this example underscores the importance of knowing what is in their possession when attempting to make entry into the United States, and declaring it accordingly,” said Port Director Devin Chamberlain. “Officers in Detroit did an excellent job in discovering and securing this high-value undeclared merchandise.”

The Canadian Jewelry owner has been advised that the items were seized.
