WARREN (WWJ) -- Several thousand homes and businesses remained without power in Warren Wednesday morning, amid dangerously hot conditions with heat index values up to 108°.
This is in the area of I-696 to around 13 Mile Rd., and Dequindre Rd. to Mound Rd., on the western side of Warren.
People at a home are struggling without their AC, and some stores and daycare centers have been forced to close.
"At about 7 o'clock last night, some of the power did come back on in the 12 Mile and Dequindre area," WWJ's Charlie Langton reporters at 9 a.m. "But, still, DTE's outage map says about 3,400 customers still without power."
Officials with DTE Energy said they do not anticipate widespread power outages in Metro Detroit because of the extreme heat.
WWJ's Jeremy Jenkins asked DTE Operations Manager Jerry Tullio about whether or not the grid can handle such high demand during these brutal summer days.
"We're monitoring the grid actively in our system control center here. You know, there's some pockets that we're looking at. However, we don't anticipate any significant issues."
Tullio said the outage in Warren is due to an equipment issue -- not due to overloading the grid.
He also said we are not to the point where the utility company recommends raising your AC temperatures to ease power usage.
Meanwhile, in Warren, residents are hoping to hear their AC and fans kick on soon.
This includes former Warren Mayor Jim Fouts, who wasn't too happy when he ran into Langton while out jogging.
"They need to talk about livability," Fouts said. "Often, you hear affordability — how about livability? How about the ability of people to be able to go to sleep at night and get a full night's sleep before they have to get up and go to work?"
"Right now, it's quite hellish in the area," Fouts said.
An Extreme Heat Warning remains in effect for all of Southeast Michigan, through 8 p.m. Thursday.
On Wednesday, the temperature breaking the record of 98 last reached in 1931, with high humidity.
Overnight temperatures are only expected to fall into the mid-70s, offering little relief from the prolonged heat, and the NWS said it will remain hot through the Fourth of July holiday weekend.
