DETROIT (WWJ) -- Wayne State University is joining other public schools in requiring students, faculty and other workers to be vaccinated.
A statement from President M. Roy Wilson Tuesday morning says in order to best protect the health and safety of the campus community, WSU will require everyone who plans to be on campus during the fall semester to receive the COVID-19 vaccination.
Proof of the vaccination has to be uploaded by August 30 at wayne.edu/coronavirus.
Those who purposefully violate the mandate by coming to campus unvaccinated after August 30 will "face consequences," Wilson said. The mandate does not affect students and personnel who will be working remotely.
It is also an option to apply online for a waiver of the requirement if you have legitimate health issues or religious reasons. If approved by the Campus Health Committee, those individuals will be required to be tested for COVID-19 once a week.
Due to the recent increase in coronavirus cases, masks will also be required indoors for everyone at Wayne State -- regardless of vaccination status -- starting today (August 3) through September 15.
Wilson says he understands that masks are inconvenient, but the measure is temporary, and it is more important to be safe.
“While this might slow our return to normal, it will not stop it,” Wilson wrote. “I remain hopeful for a great fall and a robust winter semester, but we also must remain vigilant. Thank you for doing your part to keep us Warrior safe.”
