DETROIT (WWJ) – A Detroit family’s dog is recovering after reportedly being shot by a Wayne State Police officer.

The alleged shooting took place around 9:30 p.m. Friday outside the family's apartment in the area of Frederick and Beaubien, near Peck Park in Midtown, according to multiple reports.

A university spokesperson says the officer felt threatened and that the 10-year-old goldendoodle named Ace charged them, according to a report from WDIV in Detroit.

The family says Ace has been an official emotional support dog since 2017 and that he is gentle and just curiously trotted over to the officers before being shot through the jaw.

“He spotted an officer and began trotting up to him, and when the officer saw Ace, he looked at me and then looked at Ace and just shot him,” the dog’s owner, 18-year-old Justin Fuller, told the Free Press.

Fuller has said the officer did not give any warning or command to get the dog before shooting him, according to reports.

Police were reportedly in the area for a welfare check unrelated to Fuller's family.

The goldendoodle was taken to a pet hospital in Southfield and was released to his family Saturday morning with stitches and a cone attached to his neck.

School officials say the incident is under investigation.

The family plans to file a complaint with Wayne State police.
