HASTINGS, Mich. (WWJ) — A West Michigan man is in custody after allegedly threatening a woman, her child and police with a bow and arrow during a police standoff Saturday night.

The mother — who had told a third party she was being held at the home and was not allowed to leave — and her 18-month-old child are safe after the man was arrested, according to a report from WZZM.

It all unfolded around 9:30 p.m. Saturday in Hastings — about 40 miles southeast of Grand Rapids — after police were called to the home for a domestic violence incident.

When officers showed up they tried to talk to the suspect, a 33-year-old Hastings man, through a screen door. He came to the door with a compound bow in his hands and shut the door as officers tried to speak with him, according to WZZM.

Officers saw what appeared to be blood on the front porch as they continued to try talking with him. The 33-year-old woman was eventually able to come out of the home and speak with police, according to the report.

She told officers the man “had told her he was going to kill everyone in the home, along with police,” the report says. She said the blood on the porch from her hand, after the suspect had pointed an arrow at her and she pushed the bow away, the report says.

She told police her baby was still inside, sleeping in their bed and officers continued trying to negotiate a peaceful surrender.

After getting assistance from the Barry County Sheriff’s Department Entry Team to enter the home with a search warrant, authorities found the man in a back room of the home and he was arrested.

The child was found unharmed and was returned to the woman.

The suspect, whose name has not been released, is being held at the Barry County Jail on three counts of felonious assault, resisting and obstructing police, according to WZZM. Other charges may also be filed.
