LASALLE TWP. (WWJ) — Police are investigating after a 52-year-old West Michigan man was killed in a crash on a dead-end street in Monroe County Sunday morning.
The crash happened shortly before 8:30 a.m. on Lakeshore Drive in La Salle Township, according to the Monroe County Sheriff's Office.
Authorities says Robert Fuss of Allegan — about 25 miles northwest of Kalamazoo — was driving a 2023 Subaru Outback south on Lakeshore when he drove past the intersection of Avenue I and left the dead end of the road, crashing into a lagoon.
Fuss was found dead, outside the car, in the water when first responders showed up.
Police believe speed was a factor in the crash, but it was not immediately clear whether alcohol played a role or if he was wearing a seatbelt. Officials say the car's airbags did not deploy.
The Monroe County Sheriff's Office Dive team was activated and assisted at the scene with an underwater search of the lagoon, as well as the recovery of the vehicle. Members of the La Salle Township Fire Department and Monroe Community Ambulance assisted at the scene.
Authorities are still investigating the crash and are asking anyone who knows something to call the Monroe County Sheriff's Office at 734-240-7719. Anonymous tips can be called to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK-UP.
