ROYAL OAK (WWJ) -- Where is the Police Chief of Royal Oak, Corrigan O'Donahue?

He hasn't been around in awhile, as social media buzzes with speculation that O'Donahue has been fired or otherwise forced out of his role as top cop for the Oakland County city.

WWJ Newsradio 950 spoke with Royal Oak City Manager Paul Brake, who said the chief may be considering "retirement."

Brake stressed that, as of Thursday morning, he could not confirm rumors that O'Donahue has been fired, or forced to retire.

"No, no. Chief O'Donahue is still on payroll; he's out of the office this week," Brake said.

"He is retirement eligible," Brake added. "Out of respect to him, to what he's contemplating on his professional next move, thing's have not been finalized at this point... I'm just telling you that there is some retirement he is eligible to use, and that's where we're at."

O'Donohue's contract expires in early December.

So, can Royal Oak residents expect that the chief will ever be coming back to the office this year?

"I don't know that, so that's part of the conversation that we'll have, and we'll be coming back with some more information about that," Brake said.

As questions remain, Brake said he may have more to say on the situation next week.

In the meantime, Deputy Chief Mike Moore is running the Royal Oak Police Department in O'Donahue's absence.
