WALLED LAKE (WWJ) – An Oakland County woman has been rewarded for simply doing the right thing.

Back on Jan. 21 Dianne Gordon of White Lake stopped at a gas station to warm up on her daily two-mile walk home from work when she found a bag full of cash – nearly $15,000 worth of cash.

Anyone could use that kind of money, especially Gordon, who had been without a car for more than a year. But instead of taking off with the cash, she called the police.

Sgt. Brad Connell with the White Lake Police Department responded to the scene, telling WWJ’s Jon Hewett he expected to find “a couple hundred bucks or a few hundred dollars.”

“So I get there and meet Dianne and she turns in this bag of money, and I look and I’m like, ‘wow, that’s a large sum of money,’” he said.

Police soon discovered the money belonged to a newlywed couple, and it was returned to them.

But police were so moved by Gordon’s good will they decided to reward her, setting up a GoFundMe account in hopes of raising enough money to help her buy a used car.

More than $60,000 later, Gordon is the new owner of a Jeep Compass. Gordon took delivery of the SUV on Tuesday from the Szott Automotive Group in White Lake.

She said Tuesday she didn’t expect the resounding reaction from those who donated to the GoFundMe. After all, she “just did what I was taught to do.”

“I was in shock,” she said of the generous donors. “And I hope more people just can do the right thing. It doesn’t take anything to just do the right thing.”

Gordon says her new Jeep will help her “get a life back.”

“I can actually go grocery shopping and do things. I haven’t been out of White Lake or Waterford in a year. I haven’t gone anywhere. It’s gonna be fun to go see my friends and see the kids a whole lot more,” she said.

By Tuesday night her GoFundMe page had nearly reached $75,000.
