(WWJ) -- New polling shows that Gov. Gretchen Whitmer's job approval rating has increased to 56%.

The poll, conducted by the Glengariff Group, asked whether voters would vote for Whitmer and 40% said they would, while 42% said they would vote for someone new and 12% said it depends on who runs against her.

The founder of the group, Richard Czuba, said they also looked at how Whitmer would fare against potential Republican opponents, like former Detroit Police Chief James Craig, Garrett Soldana, Kevin Rinke and Tudor Dixon.

Czuba said Whitmer is currently up by 10 points on Craig and up by 16-17 points on the other 3 opponents.

Furthermore, Whitmer has a 62% job approval from independent voters.

"We've seen a rebound driven entirely in the last couple of months from Independent voters," said Czuba. "We all know in Michigan that Independents make the decision about who gets elected, so really good repositioning for her heading into the election."

Czuba said it's due to a shifting movement within Independent voters that accelerated in December after Whitmer announced the $400 per vehicle insurance rebate.

Whitmer's job approval rating was at 48.3% in the fall.
