DETROIT (WWJ) -- Will there be snow for Christmas metro Detroit this year? Short answer: It's not looking good, according to AccuWeather Meteorologist Brian Thompson.
Speaking live on WWJ Newsradio 950 on Wednesday, Thompson said Southeast Michiganders hoping for a White Christmas may be disappointed this year — if things play out as expected weather-wise over the next few weeks.
After a mild start to December, Thompson said there's a lot more mild weather coming our way over the next few days, with rising temps spiking up into the 50s on Saturday.
"But even as a cold front moves through, there's just not a lot of cold air behind that front, and Sunday as it clears out we're actually going to wind up above average for this time of year, with high temperatures in the 40s," he said.
"And a huge ridge in the jet stream is just going to develop over the entire eastern two-thirds of the nation — really the entire nation east of the Rockies next week — and that's going to give us temperatures mostly near or above 50 degrees. We might even have a day or two when we're up close to 60, believe it or not."
While things can change this far out, Thompson said at this point there's no indication of a good chance for snow on Dec. 25.
And Thompson said next week's warmup is a major factor. "That takes away kind of a week before Christmas that can sometimes deliver snow, and if it's cold enough sometimes we can keep the show on the ground," he said.
"Now there are signs that it will turn colder toward Christmas... but the question is will we have any opportunities for snow by then?"
It's not totally off the table, Thompson said.
