(WWJ) There's snow on the ground across Metro Detroit, and more on the way.

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory in effect until 4 p.m. Wednesday (12/10) for Macomb, Oakland and Livingston counties.

Forecasters say a mix of rain and snow would persist through the morning, and then change over to snow during the afternoon.

Craig Bryson with the Road Commission for Oakland County said the plows headed out starting at 9 p.m. Tuesday.

Early Wednesday morning, he said they had 70 trucks on the roads.

"Well, we're trying to get salt down, trying to get that slush off the road right now," Bryson told WWJ's Luke Sloan. "The biggest challenge is the slush, trying to get to the primary roads, the ramps on the freeways, doing some team plowing on the freeways... A lot of challenges right now.

The National Weather Service has posted some official snow totals, as of Wednesday morning: Lake Orion got 7 inches, and White Lake Twp. and Shelby Twp. both got just over 5 inches. Troy got 4 inches, and Eastpointe measured just short of 3 inches. South of the City of Detroit, the totals are smaller, with 2 inches recorded as of Wednesday morning at Detroit Metro Airport.

On top of that, AccuWeather says additional snow accumulations of up to 2 inches are expected in Metro Detroit Wednesday afternoon.

As temperatures fall below freezing in the afternoon hours, forecasters are warning drivers of rapid freezing of untreated surfaces.

Metro Detroiters should expect slick conditions for the afternoon commute. Slow down and use caution while traveling.

Meanwhile, several cities have declared snow emergencies — meaning cars and trucks need to be moved off of city streets so the snow plows can clear the snow. Among those cities posting emergencies are Birmingham and Rochester Hills, with the list expected to grow throughout the day. Those who don't move their vehicles may be ticketed or have their cars and trucks towed, so check with your local municipal office before parking on the street.

The public should also note that garbage pickup may be delayed. In Milford Township, officials said Priority Waste may only get to about half of scheduled trash and recycling pickups on Wednesday, and the rest would be picked up tomorrow.
