(WWJ) A woman is in police custody in connection with the discovery of an infant's body in Lincoln Park in early March.

Authorities say a 28-year-old woman was arrested on March 30 in connection with the discovery of the baby on March 6. In what police called a "very disturbing and unfortunate incident," the infant was discovered in a wooded area near the south end of Lincoln Park.

The Wayne County Prosecutor's Office is currently reviewing the incident, according to Lincoln Park police.

Authorities did not disclose the name of the woman or the age of the baby. It was not made clear whether the woman was the baby's mother.

Lincoln Park Police are stressing that Michigan's Safe Haven laws permit a parent to surrender a newborn child not more than 72 hours old to an emergency medical service provider -- an employee on duty at a fire department, hospital or police station -- with intent not to return for the child.

The arrest was made on the eve of Child Abuse Awareness month. More than 33,000 children in Michigan become victims of child abuse and neglect every year, according to Lincoln Park police.

Police said the arrest was made after "exceptional investigative work" by the Lincoln Park Police Department, with cooperation from Wayne County and Michigan State Police. Each year, April is designated Child Abuse Prevention Month. More information on Child Abuse Prevention month can be found at www.michigan.gov/preventchildabuse.
