Woman dead after car hit by train and dragged on Detroit's east side

DETROIT (WWJ) -- A woman is dead this morning after her car was hit by a train on Detroit's east side.

Police say the 49-year old woman was crossing the tracks on Kerchevel near St. Jean when her car was hit just after 3:00 a.m. on Friday.

WWJ's Charlie Langton was the on the scene, and reported that the car had been dragged 1,000 feet down the tracks.

When emergency personnel arrived, the railroad crossing signals were on and the gates were down.

The woman was reportedly an employee at the Stellantis Jefferson North Assembly Plant who had just left work.

"We are deeply saddened by this tragic accident and extend our deepest condolences to the family, friends and coworkers of this employee. Grief counseling will be available for plant employees," Stellantis said in a statement.

The investigation by Detroit Police is ongoing.
