OSTEGO COUNTY (WWJ) -- A Macomb County family is suffering a terrible tragedy after two sisters were killed in a crash along I-75 in northern Michigan.
According to Michigan State Police, 22-year-old Kaele Polzin and her 16-year-old sister, Sara Polzin of Richmond, were passengers in a car traveling north on I-75 for a family vacation on Sunday.
The two victims’ father was in a car in front of them near Bagley Township in Ostego County, and watched in horror as a vehicle crossed the median and crashed into their car.
The two sisters were pronounced dead at the scene, while the woman who had been driving the car with the victims was taken to Ostego Memorial Hospital, where her condition is unknown.
Authorities say the 21-year-old woman who crashed into their car had been trying to avoid a separate collision on the southbound side of I-75 when she lost control and skidded into the northbound lanes.
She was also taken to Ostego Memorial, and later airlifted to a hospital in Traverse City with life-threatening injuries.
The accident remains under investigation by Michigan State Police.
